We usually include an estate planner at Choice Mom networking events, to make sure women understand everything they need to about protecting their child both BEFORE and after motherhood. Here's a tip that Julie, 28 weeks pregnant, learned from attorney Chuck Roulet at the Minneapolis event.
"I had thought about much of what he talked about. But what I didn't know until his roundtable discussion was about identifying a short term guardian. My long-term guardian is my sister in Houston. You also need to identify a short-term guardian, or the child may go to social services while the paperwork and details get worked out. Another thing I will change in my plan is to identify my sister, rather than my sister and husband. That way, if they divorce or something happens to her, I can choose an alternate rather than have my brother-in-law raise my child. These were the two great takeaways for me from the session."
