At the San Francisco event, organizational specialist Kim Guay of A Clear Vision Organizing offered these tips for getting ready for parenthood.
"Whether you are thinking about becoming a mom, in the middle of trying, or have a child already, getting organized reduces your stress, creates a calm environment and helps bring clarity to your decision making. Fertility treatments can completely take control of your life and become a source of disorganization. Setting priorities in your work and personal life while adhering to the hormone injection and blood draw schedule can be daunting. If you set up some systems and habits to help you become more organized at this point, they can continue to support you after the baby arrives and through single parenthood."
1. Practice underscheduling. Say yes less to your employer, friends, family. Build time to think, relax, decompress, take yoga or just be by yourself.
2. Focus on your priorities. Is your high stress, extended-hour job worth it right now? Can you pull back to get breathing room? Should you consider a different position?
3. Could you live more simply and inexpensively? The cost of fertility treatment increases as you get older. Could you make do with less now and get started with treatments earlier?
4. You cannot afford to be passive in this journey, financially, emotionally or physically. Do your research. Make sure you are working with a reputable clinic, sperm bank, adoption agency. Check references and performance statistics. Educate yourself about treatment protocols. Take control of your choices, don't simply rely on your doctor to tell you what to do.
5. Unitask. You might think multitasking helps you get things done faster, but you will be more effective if you focus on one thing at a time. As Sue Shellenbarger wrote in the Wall Street Journal, "Multitasking makes you stupid." Our brains require time to ramp up to a new task. If you practice nano-switching, you will have a lower quality result.
