I recently discovered the book "DailyOM: Inspirational Thoughts for a Happy, Healthy and Fulfilling Day." It is a great compilation of short philosophical insights from Madisyn Taylor, co-founder with her husband of the DailyOm website, including:
You can see why I snatched up a copy before it sold out (which it did) at the convention bookstore.
I'll be in touch with Madisyn for regular insight with ChoiceMoms.org. In the meantime, here's an excerpt from her wisdom about "Embracing Unpredictability: When Life Throws You a Curveball."
In life we are always setting goals for ourselves and working to make them happen...We know where we are headed and what we want to do, although quite often, due to forces outside our control, things do not go as we had planned...We have a tendency to get stuck in our heads, clinging to an idea of how we think life should go, and we can have a hard time accepting anything that does not comply with that idea...Remember that not only are curveballs the universe's way of keeping us awake...but they are also its method of bringing us wonderful surprises."
On a personal note, the gifts of life's unpredictability is something my 11-year-old daughter and I have learned together. One of our favorite lessons is about how her irretrievable hot chocolate spill on my new $1,500 computer led to my non-mom social life. My bursting into tears in the Apple store with a sales guy led to an unusual conversation that enabled me to check out his band. Several years later, I can count more than 15 people (young) who I interact with on a regular basis when I go out to hear music on nights when I need Mom breaks. One of those people is his bandmate and cousin -- now my beloved sound engineer for Choice Mom audio clips and podcasts. In all, I gained so much more from that sad, second $1.5K investment that, unpredictably, my daughter and I can safely attest that life's curveballs have hidden gifts.
