I couldn't do what I do on ChoiceMoms.org, and at our networking events, without the support of sponsors who specifically value the Choice Mom community. At the July 2010 New York City event, East Coast Fertility's Dr. Michael Zinger talked with women about their fertility concerns. Here's what he's offered us so far:

Tips from the event
At the Choice Moms networking event, Dr. Zinger reiterated the fact that is important for women to keep in mind that:
- A 35-year-old couple trying to conceive has a 20% chance of success in any given month; if that couple is aged 40, their chance of success is 5% each month. Obviously women defy the odds to conceive at various ages. But using insemination with frozen sperm doesn't improve the odds of sperm and egg meeting successfully any more than a couple having regular intercourse.
- Because the woman's eggs are so essential to the process, it also means that the older you are, the greater your chances of having a miscarriage. (See this blog for more on the reasons for miscarriage.) It's important to keep in mind that there are wonderful fertility treatment options for women today -- but the quality of the eggs cannot be improved.
- IVF is sometimes preferred over IUI, especially for older women, because they can pick a better selection pool of eggs per cycle, ideally retrieving 10-20. The success of IUI is very age dependent, but on average women need to expect to take at least four cycles to be successful. Often women opt to try IUI for six months, especially if they have only a $20 co-pay -- compared to upwards of $5K to pay for IVF -- but Dr. Zinger wanted to make sure women thought about whether they have 6 months of quality eggs remaining, as it can make a big difference. There are various fertility tests that can give you and doctor a much better sense.
Choice Moms in San Francisco, for one, have been interested in talking at our networking events about the home insemination process. This came up in the New York City discussion. One woman in the fertility roundtable, however, joked that "in New York we don't even do our own nails. Why would we want to try that?"
Why is Choice Moms working with East Coast Fertility?
The clinic was formed in 2002. One of its pledges, from co-founder Dr. David Kreiner, is to reduce multiple pregnancies and the incidence of twins and triplets. It offers a Single Embryo Transfer program with free cryopreservation, storage and frozen embryo transfer (FET). This is to help patients feel less pressured to transfer multiple fresh embryos (think "octomom") in order to succeed with a costly IVF procedure. They also work with other practitioners to offer holistic treatment, for emotional support, stress reduction and weight optimization. It offers a Micro-IVF program, which requires fewer fertility drugs and less cost. (They will be offering a submission to ChoiceMoms.org soon about the Micro-IVF option.)
