The American Fertility Association has a good overview of states in the U.S. where gays and lesbians are welcome.
Florida's archaic (1977) law banning gay couples and singles from adopting was finally overturned in September 2010. There are still fights coming, of course, from those who believe that a mother with a father offers the only proper environment for a child's development. You can read about it on Huffington Post, for starters.
