Coping with the adoption wait

filed under: waiting, adoption

We hear so much about the agonizing two week-wait process for women trying to conceive. But what about the agonizing wait to hear whether you've successfully passed all the steps involved in an adoption?

This Adoptive Families magazine article was a good one, written by a woman who had a husband to share the waiting process with her. But as we know, it can be tough when you don't have a partner to share the time with. I'd like to hear from single adoptive moms about what you've done to get through the waiting process. Or, if you're still in it, how you're doing.

Have you joined a support group offered by your adoption agency?

Have you written practice letters to prospective birth families?

Have you contacted local networks to learn of possible adoption avenues?

Have you worked on a bedroom for the child you expect to have someday?

Have you taken parenting classes to fill time?

Have you found new ways to pamper yourself?

Have you read recommended books about open adoption?

Have you immersed yourself in information about the international culture you expect might be part of your future child's roots?

Let us hear your story.

My adoption wait time was 5 months after completing the application process. In that time I monitored the agency website, read parenting books, and received support from family and friends. Once notified of my son, I was selected the next day by the birth mother, five days later I was in another state meeting the birth mother, the next day I was with my son in the nursery.
