Resources

One of my favorite websites is CreatingaFamily.com, run by Dawn Davenport. Like me, she's developed a comprehensive resource for her community as a labor of love. Hers is specifically designed for anyone building families through adoption, egg and sperm donation, surrogacy. Here are highlights:

NEW Resources: Dawn scours the Internet for the best information and resources on infertility or adoption. We wade through an unbelievable amount of trash to find the few treasures, such as:

Radio Show

  • NEW: January 2011 -- "How to Choose a Country For International Adoption" -- a step by step approach on how to select the best country from which to adopt.
  • December 2010 -- "Striking a Healthy Balance When Incorporating Cultural Awareness with Internationally Adopted Children: A view from Adult International Adoptees"
  • August 2010 -- Carolyn Berger, about how to choose between surrogacy, donor egg, donor embryo and adoption; whether to pursue adoption and fertility treatment simultaneously; whether one needs to stop grieving reproductive losses before starting the adoption process.
  • February 2010 -- How to Choose an Adoption Agency. One of the biggest decisions prospective adoptive parents have to make is choosing an adoption agency. How to choose, what questions to ask, how to find a reputable agency. Should you use an adoption agency or adoption attorney?
  • March 2010 -- Dawn interviewed me: "More women and men are choosing to become parents without a partner either by adoption, donor sperm, or donor egg and surrogate. What should you know before you make this choice? What advice can help you if you are already a single parent? Join our guests Mikki Morrissette, single mom through donor sperm and author of Choosing Single Motherhood, and Ann-Marie Kennedy, single mom through adoption."

  • "Surviving the Dreaded Adoption Homestudy"
I was talking with a woman last week who had just finished her third failed IVF cycle. She and her husband were gathering information on other options for parenthood. As we talked about other infertility treatment and adoption options, she said that she would prefer to adopt, but she hated the thought of the home study. "I just can’t stand the idea of someone coming into my house and judging me and deciding whether I’m worthy to be a parent. Haven’t I gone through enough already to prove that I deserve to be a parent." Boy, do I get it. If anyone should have approached the home study with confidence, it should have been me. ...The interviews at the social worker’s office were a breeze, almost enjoyable, but as the time for the first home visit approached, anxiety began to creep in.
