Donor news from Australia

filed under: Australia, regional guides, donor conception, donor offspring, policy, sperm donor

I heard from Fiona H. in Australia about the House of Parliament's decisions there about regulating the donor industry.

Here is part of the report filed, in terms of rights recommended for donor-conceived children.

One of it's recommendations is to create nationally consistent legislation (currently each district has its own laws) that should include, at a minimum:

  • a prohibition on donor anonymity;
  • a limit on the number of families a donor is able to assist;
  • rights of access by donor conceived individuals to identifying and non?identifying information about their donor and siblings; and
  • protection for the welfare and interests of donor conceived children.

We'll be hearing more from the Choice Moms team there, which testified at the hearings, about the recommendations and changes that might be in store.

Australia continues to lead the way worldwide in focusing attention on the loosely regulated donor industry.
