Pump: rent or buy?

Tips

Here's what Choice Moms have to say about breast milk pumps:

  • I bought the Lansinoh pump and it is GREAT!!! The reviews are about as good as the Medela and the cost is much more affordable I bought mine for $125 total. I love it, use it daily (2X) while at work...no problems whatsoever and to clean it is real quick and easy (I hear the Mendela is harder to clean). I would highly recommend the Lansinoh electric double breast pump to all. (Maegan)
  • So far the Medela breast pump has been recommended the most, but someone mentioned that the hospital pump (available for home rental) is more powerful than any home pumps. I assume that means that I could get milk out faster w/ the hospital pump and save some precious few minutes for sleep every time I pump. (Marinela)
  • From my experience, getting the milk out is not directly related to the strength of the pump. The hospital pumps hurt me, however, once I learned to let it go (kind of a mental thingy that looking at your baby does to you) I could pump with the smallest silliest pump. (Segal)
  • Usually when I ask my friends with kids their opinions on a product, each one will give me a different answer. However, when I asked them all about breast pumps - every one of them said RENT. The various reasons were: 1) You don't know if nursing will be right for you; doesn't make sense to go out and by a $300 pump and then find out you can only nurse for a couple of weeks; 2) Better at establishing a supply; 3) Pumps break. If you bought it, you are SOL. If it's rented, no problem to get a replacement; 4) Much faster and easier to pump at work with one.
